Location: Assentamento Terra Vista, Arataca (Bahia), Brazil

Developing ecological agricultural and forestry systems to provide food security to the local population

-   Following the organization of the “Primeira Jornada de Agroecologia da       Bahia” in the Assentamento Terra Vista, municipality of Arataca in the south of the state of Bahia (Brazil) in 2012, a strategic alliance between different indigenous communities was created. It got the name of “Teia dos Povos” (Network of Communities).

-   The Alliance is composed of the following organizations and collectives: Quilombolas (descendants of the slaves imported from Africa), Sem Terra (landless), Sem Teto (homeless), people from the outskirts of Salvador, small farmers, fishermen, social movements, students, teachers, researchers and experts in agroecology.

Concrete Goals

o  Supporting the Assentamento Terra Vista in the south of Bahia. This assentamento (occupation of land) is a reference place for environmental protection, agroecology, fish farming, cultivation of native vegetables, fruit trees, organic cocoa and chocolate.

o  Protecting the Atlantic Rain Forest (Mata Atlântica) is equally a very important goal.

o  Assisting the realisation of ecological agricultural and forestry systems in two other assentamentos: Quilombo Paraiso and Quilombo Manoel Faustino.

o  Supporting two school centres offering main courses in Agroecology.
Primary to higher education and postgraduate education are offered here, also with the dual or alternating pedagogical system, such as in the Family Rural Schools.
These schools are: Centro Florestan Fernandes and Centro Milton Santos with professional training in the field of environment, nutrition, zootechnics (livestock farming) and computer science.
